Lost between Tournai and the French border, this site is unfortunately threatened by a somewhat megalomaniac
project of Prince Michel de Ligne. That person has indeed designed (since 2007) to build here a gigantic recreation
center including snow-park, cross-country ski ring, ice ring, skate park, roller ring, free-fall-wind-tunnel (free
fall simulator), water park, kayak-rafting, outdoor wake-park, children's slide, golf, equestrian center, sports
fields (tennis courts), playground, boat stop , fishing activities, walking tours, riding tours, mountain biking,
nature discovery (what will remain of it...), tourism house, seminar rooms, auditorium, meeting space, sports museum,
fitness activities and Wellness center (SPA), riders' cottage, cottages, lake-houses, fishermen's cottage, forest cabins,
fun-village, over-water huts, hotel-restaurant and the essential center commercial. Just that ! Realistic man.
This pharaonic project has however been decreased by the authorities. And as the new Minister of Territorial Planning is
Ecolo Philippe Henry, there is hope that this "thing" will end up in the dustbin of history.
That to say.
The Grand Large is in fact a huge 45-hectare pond used for regulating the water level between the Scheldt and the
Péronnes-Blaton-Nimy canal. More than 4 million m³ of land has been moved to create this artificial lake.
The canal was dug in the 60s to allow the transport of coal from the Borinage to France nearby. Only two locks will be
needed and were built near the confluence of the Scheldt. The n ° 1 buys at once a vertical drop of 12.5 meters and the
second, 6 meters. This modern canal replaces the aging
Antoing-PommerœulNote1 canal, dug in the 19th century.
Quickly, water activities will be grafted on the banks of the basin, replacing the old shipbuilding yards. And there are
also many walks around, including a section of the RAVeLNote2.
I invite you to watch these shots on the Grand Large and its locks.
The visit was pleasant, with the passage of four pleasure boats, including one called "Tartine" !
Finally, thanks to Cedric for his technical help.
The day starts well ! I'm welcomed in Péronnes by a beautiful shower, quickly replaced by a more serene sky.
Adjacent to lock No. 2, a building housing what I think are two nice sized turbines.
The downstream portico of Péronnes 2, in the purest style of the 60's.
The space that should be slaughtered by the project of the Prince de Ligne.
Lock No. 2 and far off lock No. 1.
The upper footbridge of one of the doors.
A counterweight to the door. The door structures have been recently repainted.
The canal, downstream, a few tens of meters from the confluence with the Scheldt.
The difference in the water level between the airlock and the canal clearly visible on the walls of the lock.
We don't pass. Red light on Péronnes 2.
The Grand Large, a paradise for sailing or jet-skiing.
The impressive lock n ° 1. It allows you to buy a vertical drop of 12.60 meters.
It is 1500 meters from the n ° 2. There is only two locks on the canal.
The marina.
View of the Grand Large. Few people on the banks or on the water.
Here and there are pretty concretions.
The downstream door. Just after, 12 meters of fall.
The upstream door. Just after, the canal spreads peacefully over 40 km to Nimy (Mons region).
A stream feeding the canal. The greenish water has a smell not really nice.
The entrance of the discharge canal, useful in case of flood.
Path to the discharge canal.
One of the three engines of the valves of the discharge channel.
Built in Boom (near Antwerp) in 1960, they don't have to work very often.
The levels of the discharge canal. This kind of construction contributes to ecological fragmentation.
By the way, a wader with unknown name...
... and a pleasure boat. It will soon use the lock No. 1.
Only the foam dares to plunge into the darkness of concrete.
The huge downstream door of Péronnes 1 is closing.
A nice captain (but loudmouthed) and his family.
Next stop : the marina of Péruwelz.
The painters didn't scamp the work : everything was repainted ! We no longer know the usefulness of this electric box.
Bye.
